Journal of my quest to learn the art of bellydance. I had no instructor at the time I started this blog. I now cover all methods I have discovered to learn online and dvd reviews I have tried and costuming resources, with costs for students in mind.I am not a bellydance instructor, but a student of bellydance.

Sa´elayssa performance del DVD Bellydance Rocks!!
found this on youtube, excellent dancer, love how she uses her veil during her entrance. I love the song, has rhythmns that I enjoy practicing fast, well defined shimmies and hip moves. The title is listed under the you tube video for sale at amazon and itunes. The dancer I see has great hip action and really I love how her eye makeup is applied. Even smaller eyes can be wide and open and visible with proper makeup tricks. There are many blogs with makeup ideas, but I found the princess has great blogs on eye makeup tips. I thank her every time i apply eye makeup and watch the magic unfolding in my mirror.I plan to start practicing with sword dancing soon. I found two non sharp, light weight, balanced swords, made for dancers, pieces I really like. One js more curved style, and the other is a bit longer and tapers . The swords are for good beginner and established dancers, I wish to work with two swords in time The limk is listed in princess fharanas' April blogs. I was pleased to find they carry several other products, and the dvd on sword dancing, by princess fharhana is also on site. Prices were great, so I can order both sooner than I had expected. Check out her blog, it is well worth your time. I have learned things about bellydance from her, that were not covered in any of the classes available. Her dvd on swordwork is priced so reasonably, I can afford my sword, and how to be safe and learn. The computer has been a blessing to me. The bellydancers are a great group of ladies and male dancers alike. They all seem to be so g reat sharing their hard earned knowledge, as a beginner intermediate student, thanks to all of the bellydance world for your gracious contributions for us. Any readers who can suggest any dvds or bellydance clips, please share with us of the beginner bloggers. best wishes to all, gypsy

Zola Dubnikova at One Nest, 2009
awesome dancer using props, gotta have this music!enjoy, entrancing to watch, her persona type portrayed is what we seek, only our own individual way of expression, bellydance is theatrical in nature, and this lovely dancer is using this and her way of element of surprise is one aspect of becoming a dancer that people of all ages can enjoy; This is where I find using my camera, until I can get cams, you can put timing, moves of hips, torso, pelvic, abs, and all the athletic endurance with expressions on face.I have difficulty doing this with mirrors. You could move like a pro, but we have to work on facial harmony with song and emotions we want to rehearse. Video doesn't deceive you, and I nave learned by watching myself, humiliating at times, but pays off. When I purchase my sword, I will let you know where, princess fharana has an excellent article on swords, and not just any will be what you need. Then, that is a whole new muscle group we can work up the athleticism required to safely dance with fire or swords. This is the best dancer I have ran across online. I am considering using the link princess fharhana suggests, after all ,she does do this. Her dvds, two I located are on my christmas list.It is worth your time to subscribe to princess fharhanas' blogs, she is great about teaching new dancers and experienced dancers alike. I refer to her archives over and over. google reader is great rss feed for blogs from famous dancers sharing. enjoy, i did!

Jamil Male Belly dancer
a very good turkish dancer-male, he puts on elaborate shows with the female dancers, dance is for all. Thanks to followers for comments. I bought my costume piece by piece, at bellydance.com. It is a sponsor for ansuya and sugars' gypsynet, they have reasonable prices and sturdy clothing, even on a smaller budget. Their basic delivery has always been quick and I even got dvds from them. gypsynet is on facebook, and live classes with ansuya included when you subscribe, making it nice for those who want to learn and have no instructors. Thanks for compliment, good to know my money was well invested.gypsy.

Pseudopodia - Pilobolus Dance Theater
Found this on dance advantage, amazed at how wondrous the human body can move, at least for some.
SARAI BELLY DANCE- BALADI IMPROVISATION
The recent purchase of Ranya Renees' dvd,. Egyptian Baladi Improv.has certainly changed my posture for easier execution of the moves and knowledge of true Egyptian folk or country styles of dancing.done by the people of Egypt. This dvd has it all, including the various music styles and the terminology of the dance and the music. The first dvd in the two dvd set has how mens' music differs from womens'. traditionally. Then great demos of all rhytmns and how to count the rhythmns to each rhytmn. Shr uses props to really explain how we should hold our body and great style of teaching, which, helped me learn in ways I did not find in class..I now can determine what is acceptable and proper dance technique in different areas of Egypt and how to recognize the adaptations of the music, that we use in non middle eastern settings. I now can read a videos' title and know what they are referring to, and how the people of Egypt actually dance. She demonstrates and discusses the music and the musicians play and do examples of different beats and their names and meanings. She then has you follow her in practice and you dance and learn to count music beats that are used in bellydance. I was exploring online for other dancers who dance unchoreographed Egyptian Baladi styles, and have really enjoyed their interpretations of the music and their own unique styles. This form of dancing is especially appealing to me, because, although one should familiarize oneself with the chosen song, their are no memorized, step by step, ways to interpret the music, as in cabaret styles and troupe synchronized steps. If you use live musicians, they may not play a piece note for note, as a recorded piece would. This helps me relax more and learn to let my body feel free to feel the music, and produce my unique expression through my own body. I strongly recommend her dvd. It covered what was not covered in my egyptian class setting, and helped me use all of my senses to learn in a way that helped me understand whatt is expected of my body. Every student learns in their own way, but I believe we should use all five senses to learn, some approaches work better for others, other methods more than others, but once you try using several approaches, you will know what works for you. I bought my copy at amazon and saved money . Their used copies that are listed in new condition are fine, most are sealed, unplayed, and you can always buy new on site and they are great when it comes to customer satisfaction. As a student, without an available teacher, I have had to use several learning tools to learn bellydance. Even with the presence of an instructor, it may require another teachers' style of teaching for one to have that ever wanted lightbulb to brighten our minds. I had no terminology or props and explanations given to me in live classes that helped me as much as this dvd is helping me. It is good to have an instructor, but if you leave class, hungry to know what baladi means, or how you are told there is only one sense you need to use the most, or your body type requires some adaptations to perform a certain move, or just never are getting that everneeded feeling of praise for your positive efforts, maybe you need a different teacher, even on a dvd, to provide that for you. Never receiving any positive feedback can be very discouraging to a new dance student. We need that as much as we need constructive criticism. If you aren't getting this in class, before you give up, try a dvd, or write choreographed dances down on paper, oreven search for a class with a more positive teacher, just don't allow this to drown your desire. It is not always the students' fault they are having a problem with learning a new thing. This dancer is performing baladi in the style explained in the dvd, and is quite good and looks as though she is having a good time. And that is what we should strive for while we are learning, to have fun while we learn, good luck, keep dancin, gypsy.

Bellydance Instructional: How to Bellyroll!
my mistake , not rachel, but I like this instructional clip. When taking a more old style egyptian class, we were required to do rolls and undulations with no moving forward in chest, or slight exaggeration of lumbar arch. I have a straight back, with very little low back arch, so my moves look nicer if I involve upper body a little, rachel brice does have great video dvd on bellywork and yoga to enhance. I have heard good reports on them, but this is great teacher featured here.I even practice separation of upper/lower abs and rolls when watching a movie. If you keep posture correct, it works. While waiting at Walmart is great time to do this, if you can detect your moves in clothes that cover more, just think how far you have trained those muscles, and muscles have a memory like an elephant! rock n ROLL time!
Bellydance Instructional: How to Bellyroll!
the queen of bellyrolls, rachel brice, i am definently buying her dvds, have fun, dance!

DALILA OF CAIRO, DANCING A PURE EGYPTIAN STYLE BALADI
this is really great baladi style, after purshasing ranya renees' dvd on improv baladi egyptian style, I found myself on youtube and have benefited by her dvd and watching good dancers, like dalila. it has helped me get my posture right and as a result, transitions in movement are simpler. enjoy the dance, love her costume, it shows just enough to see her athletic ability and looks like the way some might dress for this style.happy dancing to all.

Ranya of NYC & Maqamikaze company- "Alf Leyla w'Leyla"
This adorable choreography featuring ranya renee, with young students is great. The rock version of this song was on the previous post. Hard to believe how well it can be transformed, while keepimg essential for this dance rhythms unchanged for the dancer, all of the basic moves are in both versions, I really love this brilliant dance clip in its' entirety, enjoy.
Alf leyla wa Leyla - Arab Rock -
I am finding some neat stuff while checking out egyptian baladi, real old style egypt ,ranya renee dvd changed my life, see earleir posts. But I am sure most have heard of shakira, great voice and loves bellydance moves as well. This is a traditional song, but played by skilled rock style band with conventional instruments. This is what the typical Arab young person is doing with the old dance art, and I love it. Teens and music are definitely a part of life, no matter what race, creed or skin tone. I will be searching for more, but this is full length, enjoy.

Ava Fleming - Rakkasah 2010
ran across this versatile display by ava fleming, she does several styles, her teaching dvd a priority now enjoy
Shunyata Belly Dance 1
this is tribal, i am seriously thinkin of classes/dvds, after i study with my egyptian/gypsy/cabaret class longer. My instructor is one of few teachers, who taught in egypt, the old way. I am learning fundamentals from her. I am performing my first solo next month, and , to my surprise, will be performing with intermediate 1 class. I have worked hard and my illeopsis is getting so limber, I am lying down with the foot under knee back stretch. Never dreamed I would gain that much flexibility at my age,I am really loving zills in intermediate class.I found a great dvd set(2) Ranya Renee, baladi egyptian instruction. I have been wanting this dvd for some time. It is loaded with cultural info and moves with great ,easy to follow style.Amazon has a few copies left. And it won't break you. I, also found another shopping site. I still use miss bellydance.com, they r great, but this is off facebooks' gypseynet, anasayus' and sugar new fb page. Their sponsor, bellydance.com, find at gypsynets' emporium, have terrific stuff, see last blog for bratop it is more tribal. like style in this video, and have harem with skirt on order. I will post pic as soon as I get pics.Their headpieces are only 4.99, but I did purchase auburn bobby pins to secure, I have a small hat size. When you are dancing , it could shake loose, the tops are velcro at neck, so secure any velcro on a costume with extra hooks/eyes and carry safety pins, avoiding embarassment or incarceration, just in case. I find I am learning to check my costume I pick to wear to public dance, It is amazing how your hips can shrink, this is real workout doing middle eastern dance. If so, I have to move the hooks and eyes on my belt. I am preparing for a dress rehearsal, the camera doesn't lie, mirrors are great, but subjective.I learned that we see ourselves a bit differently and we have to concentrate on facial and arm/hand expression. I am just going to relax and have fun. Have a great journey this week and maybe even start a bellyquest, gypsy

The Kentuckiana Middle Eastern Dance Review: Laugh out loud
The Kentuckiana Middle Eastern Dance Review: Laugh out loud: "I can't stop watching this cute video made by Gia al Qamar. It has made it rounds on Oriental Dancer and facebook but if you missed it take ..."
BELLYDANCE CHALLENGES
When I began taking formal classes in bellydamce a few months back, I had no idea how much fun I would have; I ,also never realized how dance class differs from home studies. I had never stepped foot in a real dance class, and with the dvd/online method, there is all positive feedback, with no constructive criticism. You heat things like, great, that's great, etc. But in live classes, you may not even be aware of how you are positioned, even with the aid of a mirror, unless you have studio type settings in your home, you may only see certain angles of your moves. Then you must be aware of what the arms, face, and hands are doing. I found that I would need to learn a totally different posture than I used in other workouts. I had to learm ,that I need to have my chest over my foot area. That doesn't sound so tough, after all. I have great posture. I found out that your body would be asked to make moves that it would not be asked to do under regular motion. I also discovered how many muscles there are in between my ribcage(intercostal muscles.) Wow, a new meaning to the no pain, no gain phrase. Then there is the differences in each individuals basic anatomy. I have a straight back. Iy has very little arch in the lumbar region. This is great for equine sports, but doing an undulation is a challenge to do , at least in the style that my teacher is teaching at this time. If I don;t use more of a forward chest motion, it is not as obvious how my spine moves, and it can be discouraging when you really are a perfectionist type personality/ I have found that it requires communication between your teacher and you. This can be a challenge if the teacher doesn't hear your questions about a move or how or where you are starting a choreography. Middle eastern dance is hard work and requires a commitment to learn it. I do find that it is a very effective workout aerobically, and will have your body changing very rapidly, downright dangerous curves will develop and you will get that flat tummy, above and below the belt. I am not really a fan of a lot of meat in my diet, but I am craving the protein needed to support building muscles. I suggest taking supplements as required for your age group, as well as a protein supplement to enhance muscle response to the intensity of this workout. I am eating like I did at 14yo;like a large mammal, but making good choices , not just any food. After all, I want my newfound abs to show and have nice definition. I have found this class business very exhilirating, addictive, and often enough humiliating, there goes rhat perfectionism again, and I thought I had that all worked out. I have made some great pals at live classes. I have a very good teacher. I had forgotten how to relate to people, I was shut in for a period of time with my late hubby. But ,it is helping me learn how to interact with others as a non nurse. That was my identity for a long time. Being a nurse makes it easier to relate to folks at the time, but now I am relating on different turf. The people don't know me as the nurse, but just a harley riding newbie with so much to learn. But I know that I am getting better with each class. I have very small place to work out and no full mirrors for large moves, but I use the video for feedback, and the camera shows it like it is. I , also, find it comforting that my muscles have memory and that once I know how a move should feel in order to make that move in the proper manner. I have found that a simple costume is motivating and helps with the theatrical skills one must learn, it makes me feel like a dancer and a goddess. This has proven very helpful for me. I also wear fingerless gloves for dance, to help me be aware of what my arms and hands are doing. Now if I can improve on memory of choreography, I can concentrate more on all of the other stuff. I have decided to write down the steps and what count the step is initiated on. Writing things down is a leftover learning/memory tactic I used while doing my nursing duties.I am started on zills. It is an intermediate class, but it will assist me to coordinate moving, while playing a percussion instrument. I am doing a solo dance at the greek night next month. I have a great respect for the challenges of choreographing a dance. Our teachers out there work hard to make the moves suited to our skill level. The illeopsis muscles are getting limber,( see the previous link on this muscle group that dancers use. So now it is practice and then practice some more. My feet are getting more callous in the areas needed to dance with bare feet and to dance on the balls of my feet. I have ordered a couple of dvds on dance, will let you know how they are soon. I got them for a great price at amazon. I also got a great bratop from gypseynets' emporium. This is a site worth visiting on facebook. Gotta get to work on my solo and get those hips moving. Happy dancing from gypsy on her bellyquest. I am inserting a funny video, it has been around, but for those who missed it, it is very cute.

VIDEO CLIPS TO HELP WITH SHIMMIES
I HAVE FOUND THROUGH EHOW VIDEO SET ON SHIMMIES, HOW TO DO BASIC SHIMMY , CHOO-CHOO SHIMMY,AND EVERY OTHER SHIMMY WITH MOVES, WHICH STARTS BREAKING DOWN LAYERING ALL SORTS OF BASIC MOVES WITH SHIMMY LAYERED TOGETHER. IN CLASSES, WE DO A LOT OF EXERCISES TO STRENGTHEN THOSE QUADRICEPS(LARGE THIGH MUSCLES, PLIES, ARE GREAT FOR BUILDING LARGE MUSCLES OF REAR,NAMED GLUTEUS MAXIMUS. THEY MUST BE STRONG TO DO A LOT OF DANCE MOVES IN BELLYDANCE. THERE IS AN ENTIRE SET OF VIDEOS I WILL LIST, WHICH ILLUSTRATE SHIMMIES. PRACTICE THESE ON A DAILY BASIS. THE HIP SHOULD BE VISIBLY MOVING UP AND DOWN. SLOW AND FAST, THIS IS AWKWARD AT FIRST, BUT YOUR KNEES REMAIN SOFT, NOT RIGID, DEPENDING ON SPEED OR BEAT OF SONGS USED,YOU KEEP THE TIME TO MUSIC WITH THE SHIMMY. WHEN LAYERING THIS ON A HIP FIGURE EIGHT OR WITH ARM MOVEMENTS,ETC., YOU WILL NEED TO CONTINUE STEADY SHIMMY ALONG WITH ADDED MOVES. HERE ARE EXAMPLES OF DIFFERENT SHIMMIES. THIS SERIES HAS REALLY HELPED ME TO DO A HIP CIRCLE OR ARM MOVES, WHILE MAINTAINING A REGULAR SHIMMY. PRACTICE EVERY CHANCE YOU GET. IF YOU USE A VIDEO, PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO MUSIC AND HOW TEACHER COUNTS BEATS, THIS WILL GIVE YOU BEAT WHERE ARMS WILL BE IN TIME WITH COUNT OR RHYTHM OF SONG YOU ARE DANCING TO. SOME OF THE EHOW VIDEOS MAY STILL BE LISTED ON UTUBE AS EXPERT VILLAGE. THEY ARE GREAT RESOURCES ON UTUBE. JUST TYPE IN BELLYDANCE OR BE SPECIFIC ON EGYPTIAN, TRIBAL, OR PREFERRED STYLE AND SPECIFIC MOVES YOU DESIRE AND START YOUR OWN VIDEO LIBRARY.I HAVE STARTED INCORPORATING ZILLS IN MY INTERMEDIATE CLASS. I WANTED TO LEARN ZILLS(FINGER CYMBALS), WHILE I AM LEARNING OTHER MOVES, TO MAKE IT EASIER TO COUNT THE DRUM RHYTHMN BEING PLAYED. ANASAYU HAS GREAT DVD ON PLAYING ZILLS AND BEATS OF THE DUMDEC DRUM. I HAVE BEEN VERY FORTUNATE TO HAVE A GREAT INSTRUCTOR, WHO HAS TAUGHT ME THOSE THINGS THE DVD IS NOT ABLE TO HELP WITH., EX. BODY POSTURE AND LEARNING THE CHOREOGRAPHY AND CORRECT BODY POSITIONS.HERE ARE SOME GREAT RESOURCES.

EXERCISE AND MUSCLE GROUPS TO STRENGTHEN FOR DANCE
I FOUND SOME GREAT EXERCISES TO SHARE,THEY REALLY STRENGTHEN THAT HARD TO PINPOINT MUSCLES OF INNER THIGHS,EXPERT VILLAGE HAS A LOT OF DANCE VIDEOS TO HELP YOU ON YOUR DANCEQUEST, WHETHER IT BE MIDDLE-EASTERN OR BALLET, TAP OR JUST HAVIN FUN DANCING. I HAVE LEARNED SO MUCH FROM THEIR COLLECTIONS.THEY ARE POSTED, WITH LINKS ON PREVIOUS POST-PAGE. I FOUND ,ALSO, THAT WHEN PERFORMING CERTAIN MOVES, THAT THERE IS THE MUSCLE GROUPS CLOSE TO ILLIUM, WHICH UNTIL DEVELOPED, MAKE THOSE MOVES AWKWARD. DANCE ADVANTAGE HAS AN EXCELLENT ARTICLE ON THE ILLEOPSIS, WHICH EVEN FOR A RETIRED NURSE, WAS GOOD TO REVIEW. THIS IS A BALLET BLOG, BUT HAS A WORLD OF GREAT INFO TO IMPROVE YOUR ENTIRE BODY,ARMS,HANDS,HEAD TO TOE. SO STOP BY THERE AND ENLIGHTEN YOURSELF WITH IMPORTANT FACTS TO FACILITATE INJURY PREVENTION. MUSCLES ARE AMAZING TO ME, BECAUSE THEY HAVE CELLS WITH MEMORY, AND UNLIKE YOUR BONE STRUCTURE, THE MUSCLES CAN BE MOLDED, LIKE CLAY. YOU MUST STRETCH,AND WARMUP PROPERLY, AND WORK OPPOSING GROUPS AS WELL. UNEVEN BUILDING OF MUSCLE IS NOT ONLY LESS ATTRACTIVE, BUT PREDISPOSES THE ATHLETE TO INJURY. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY, AND NEVER FORGET TO BREATHE IN THE MANNER IN WHICH YOU SHOULD. I LIKE YOGA FOR LEARNING HOW/WHEN OF USING THE BREATHE TO EXERCISE WITH OXYGEN(AEROBIC).HAPPY NEW YEAR,KEEP ON DANCING. ALLOWING YOURSELF TO WORK AT YOUR PACE OR LEVEL. DANCING IS VERY DRAINING AT FIRST,I GO TO CLASS 3X/WEEK, AND THE FIRST MONTH I HAD TO REST MORE BETWEEN DANCE CLASSES. NOW, I DANCE AND CROSS-TRAIN MORE OFTEN. SO DON'T GIVE UP, UNLESS DUE TO HEALTH ISSUES. YOU WON'T REGRET IT, AT ANY AGE,GYPSY INGRAM-STOW.
